Heading to Hopkins Village on your vacation? Rent a car from Roam Belize
One of the most interesting places to visit in Belize is the small village of Hopkins. Located where the sapphire waters of the Caribbean coast meet the palm trees and golden sands of Stann Creek District, Hopkins is an idyllic village with approximately 1,000 residents. Despite its small size, Hopkins is considered to be the cultural center of the Garifuna people in Belize.
The Garifuna are the descendants of African slaves imported to work on sugar plantations in the Caribbean and indigenous islanders. After rising up against British control, the Garifuna were forced to flee across the Caribbean, eventually arriving on the shores of Belize more than 200 years ago. Having carefully preserved their language, music, dance, and culture, the Garifuna were recognized by the United Nations as key contributors to the oral and intangible history of humanity in 2001.
The village of Hopkins celebrates its Garifuna heritage year-round but truly comes alive during the national holiday of Garifuna Settlement Day in November and on Hopkins Day, entrancing and entertaining visitors and locals with sacred drum ceremonies that last throughout the night. Even on non-holidays, exhibitions of Garifuna drumming, dance, and food are ways for locals to experience and learn more about this unique culture.
The village of Hopkins is located at the base of the Maya Mountains, specifically the Cockscomb Range that connects to the nearby Cockscomb Basin Nature Reserve, the only nature preserve in the world specifically dedicated to monitoring and protecting jaguars. The village of Hopkins is separated into two parts; a southern side called False Sittee (named for the nearby Sittee River) and a northern side called Baila (Spanish for “dance”). Most villagers continue to engage in traditional pursuits, including farming, fishing, and handicrafts, and are renowned throughout Belize for their genuine warmth, friendliness, and hospitality.
