Easter in Belize
Easter is a unique holiday in Belize, not only because the four-day weekend is a time for nationwide picnics, family get togethers, and the blossoming of flowers, but because it’s a time when visitors and Belizeans working abroad can all enjoy time together.
Starting on Good Friday, which falls on April 14 this year, the Easter weekend is a time for reflection and faith followed by a trip to the beach, large meals of scrumptious home cooked foods, and lots of exciting sporting events. With adults off from work and kids off from school, everyone in Belize is excited to take advantage of the good weather to travel to their favorite spots, cheer excitedly for parades, and dance the night away to live music.
In Belize, tradition holds that anyone who goes swimming on Good Friday will turn into a fish. Another Easter tradition is that a coconut tree chopped with a machete will ooze blood and that the image of Jesus can be seen inside egg yolks. At 3:00 pm, the Christian faithful pause for a moment in remembrance of the death on the cross.
Holy Saturday is when thousands turn out to cheer on the competitors in the Cycling Classic that has pitted racers against one another to be the first to complete the grueling 140-mile Belize City to San Ignacio and then back again to Belize City course. Easter Sunday (April 16 in 2017) is a time for family, feasting, and games, including hunting for colored eggs. Easter Monday is the last day before everyone heads back to school and work, making it the perfect time to savor a hike or go for one final swim at the beach.
“Easter is truly a magical time in Belize and a wonderful time to visit,” said Julie Zelaya, director of Roam Belize. “Whether you’re partaking in church services or simply want to enjoy the fabulous weather and celebrations like beach parties in Placencia, parades and parties across the country, or the big cross-country bicycle race, the four-day Easter weekend is the perfect time to meet locals, explore the great outdoors, and sample our delicious food.”
